If you’ve seen me recently you might have noticed a new twinkle in my eye and a new springy rebound in my step.  It would have been most noticeable if you had also seen me a few weeks ago when I was felled by a nasty respiratory infection and spent practically two weeks vegetating in bed,   Progress was measured in small victories.  I actually was happy to congratulate myself if I could take a shower without getting out of breath.   My self-image was hit hard, but it’s now returned to positive territory. The body wants to heal itself, I’ve read.  The body wants to heal itself I want to believe.  The body, with the help of drugs, did indeed heal and the miracle of it all is that the years, in the last few days, are just peeling off of me.  It’s quite a sight to behold.

What’s transformed me into a leprechaun, or maybe I should say ninja,  other than a course of drugs,  is the anticipation of my upcoming journey next week when I return to Japan for a month’s stay. In my mind’s eye, I can see the buds of the cherry blossom trees swelling in anticipation of our mutual reacquaintance.

Not to miss the commercial action that accompanies this time of year, Japanese McDonald’s is serving up a cherry drink in special glasses.  I’ll probably get it with whipped cream.  More festive.

I recently read that it’s not cool for people to try and compete with the cherry blossoms in turns of dress, etc, so my pink touches shall be limited this year, but not completely excluded, so as to still have some personal dress up fun.  I’m very fond of a pale pink woven scarf that I bought in Japan many years ago.  That’s making the cut.

Also, in preparation, I bought myself a new iPhone 7plus, so that my camera will be better for the photos I never tire of taking when in Japan.
I’ve checked out this month’s Kyoto Visitor’s Guide.  Do take a look at it!  It’s a monthly publication that is my go-to bible of worthwhile activities and events when I’m in Kyoto.  I’m always pleased and astonished at what I discover each visit, thanks to this Guide.
This trip, I’m travelling with one of my daughters and her young children whom I’ve determined are a perfect age to be introduced to the land their Grandma is kookoo about.  Hoping I’m right about that.  I’ve prepared an itinerary for them and I know we’ll be busy.  Some of the must sees that I’ve done many times, they can do themselves and for sure they can visit the cat cafés on their own.

Follow Me

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I blog most days while I’m in Japan.  Just have lots I want to share.  If you’re not “following” me, this is a good time to click that “follow”button, so you can share in the beauty, ritual and fun of spring celebrations  in the Land of the Rising Sun.

In an attempt to slow life's quickening pace, I'm writing to share my personal perspective on the aging process, its dilemmas, the humorous self-deception, the insights and the adventure of it all. I spent the bulk of my time in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA, but manage to get to NYC a few times times a year. I've been a dancer/dance teacher and dance supporter almost all my life. For the past20years, I help create and produce a month-long creative residency in Santa Barbara for contemporary American choreographers and their dancers. It's been incredibly gratifying. This year, I decided it's time to retire! Big change. I also now spend several weeks a year in Kyoto Japan, residing for several weeks in the spring and the fall. I've been magnetically attracted to Japan for many years. Now I live out a dream to live there part-time.

So glad you are up and At ’em again. Looking forward to the Japanese posts! Headed out to Weaverville today for a little family reunion. Oh boy

  • Hi Dianne so glad you are feeling better. Just sounds horrible. We are about to launch the JAPAN STYLE show here in Colorado. My collection and a show that Robert Yellin and I curated on Japanese ceramics will be launched at the end of the month. I will be in Japan from April 1-16 with a client (family of 6) from London. We will be in the Kansai area from April 6-10. I have another set of clients in September so a good year for all things Japanese and it keeps me away from all the alternative fakeness that seems to be seeping up from under the depths of insanity.

    Hugs, GH ᐧ
